That’s exactly the idea behind the new IELS 40+ English & Mediterranean Lifestyle Programme, launching in Malta in 2027.

Designed for adults aged 40 and over, the programme combines English lessons with cultural experiences and social activities, creating the perfect balance between learning, exploring and enjoying Mediterranean life.

English Learning That Fits the Experience

The programme includes 20 General English lessons per week, covering the key skills you need to communicate more confidently in everyday situations.

Wherever possible, participants will study alongside learners of a similar age, subject to English level.

But the experience doesn’t end when class finishes. Malta itself becomes part of the learning process, giving you plenty of opportunities to use English naturally while exploring the island and connecting with other international students.

It’s also a great opportunity to put into practice some of our tips to improve your English while living abroad.

Discover Malta Beyond the Classroom

One of the highlights of the 40+ programme is its daily Cultural & Social Programme.

During the two weeks, participants can experience different sides of Malta through a mix of cultural visits, excursions and social activities.

A typical programme may include experiences such as exploring Valletta and Mdina, visiting Marsaxlokk, discovering Gozo and the Blue Lagoon, enjoying coastal walks and joining relaxed evening activities with the group.

It’s a chance to discover Malta without rushing from one attraction to another — and to share the experience with people from different parts of the world.

Malta at One of the Best Times of the Year

The programme will take place twice in 2027:

03 May – 14 May 2027

04 October – 15 October 2027

And there’s a reason behind those dates. May and October are two of Malta’s most pleasant periods, offering mild weather and fewer crowds than the peak summer months. In spring, the island is perfect for exploring historic cities, spending time outdoors and discovering some of the best things to do in Malta in spring.

Autumn brings another side of Mediterranean life, with warm temperatures and plenty of opportunities to explore the island, enjoy cultural experiences and spend time outdoors without the intensity of the summer season.

More Than an English Course

What makes this programme different is the combination of learning and experience.

You can start the morning improving your English in class, spend the afternoon discovering somewhere new in Malta and finish the day sharing a drink, a meal or an activity with people you may never have met otherwise.

And all of those moments become opportunities to use English in real life.
